Young golfing star continues to shine

IT'S been quite a year for Palmer Golf youngster Jack Sullivan.

Just 15 short months ago the 17-year-old Gold Coast-based rising star claimed his first tournament win, but now stands proudly as the number two junior male golfer in the country.

This time last year Sullivan was ranked 25th but a combination of determination, dedication to his craft and a strong work ethic has catapulted the modest youngster to prominence. He flirted with top spot through the year, but ended the ranking season in a highly creditable second place overall.

Sullivan is employed in Palmer Golf's maintenance department, a job where he can immerse himself in the industry he loves but still pursue his on-course dreams.

And those dreams are quickly becoming a reality for the Gold Coast youngster. His tournament wins this year include the prestigious NSW Junior Boys Championship where he saw off a strong field and finished five shots ahead of his closest rival.

His meteoric rise is no accident though; the youngster set a goal of reaching Australia's top five before the end of 2013 and the hard yards on both course and driving range have paid off.

"It feels awesome to have exceeded my goals for the year. I wanted to be in the top five by the end of 2013 so to make it to the number one spot during the year and finish second overall is a real boost to my confidence," Sullivan said.

"I've worked hard on my game, especially the mental side of golf. I feel more composed now and don't get so down on myself if I hit a bad shot. I just try to focus on the next one and make sure it's better. I've been able to do that a lot more and it's been a massive help to my game."

Sullivan will soon switch his attention to this year's Greg Norman Junior Masters tournament, which will once again be played across three of Palmer Golf's south-east Queensland courses.

The Gold Coast's Palmer Colonial course in Robina will host the colourful opening ceremony and registration day on Friday 13 December 2013, followed by the first two rounds on Saturday 14 December and Sunday 15 December 2013 respectively.

Round three will be held at Palmer Gold Coast (Robina, Gold Coast) on Monday 16 December and the tense final round at Palmer Coolum Resort on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Tuesday 17 December will be a travel and practice day for the players.

At the 2012 Junior Masters Sullivan finished sixth although he did take out the team challenge prize representing Palmer Golf with stablemate Anna Stanton. This year though he has set his sights higher still.

"This year's Greg Norman Junior Masters will be my last tournament as a junior so I feel a real determination to go out with a win under my belt," Sullivan said.

"As always the field will be very strong but you always want to test yourself against the best.
