Australian representation at the US Junior Amateur Championship at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, has been reduced from three to one with the elimination of Karl Vilips and Elvis Smylie after the opening round of match-play.

Perth’s Josh Greer has advanced to the Round of 32 with his 2&1 victory over American August Meekhof and he will face another American, George Duangmanee, in tomorrow morning’s match-up.

For Vilips and Smylie, however, their week has ended, Vilips, the 10th seeded player, going down to the 55th seed Yuki Moriyama of Japan 4&3 and Smylie, who finished 12th in the stroke-play qualifying, never ahead in his match against 51st seed American Thomas Ponder, their match finishing when Ponder birdied the 16th to win 3&2.

18-year-old Greer, born in Scotland but now established in one of Australia’s golfing hotbeds of golfing development in Perth, was locked in a tense match against Meekhof for much of today’s encounter before finally pulling away with wins at the 16th and 17th holes for his victory.
