The Australian Men’s Interstate Teams Matches title has been won by Victoria after a final fitting of such a significant title in Australian golf.

The outcome of the eight individual match-ups at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide swung either way throughout the course of the afternoon although the early win by Victorian Darcy Brereton over Queensland’s Dylan Gardner played a key role in momentum for his side.

Louis Dobbelaar squared the ledger when he won the second match with a 3&2 win over Will Victoria’s Heffernan after holing an eagle pitch to win 3&2.

It was however a delicately balanced battle for most of the afternoon and the outcome was in doubt until the final hole victory by Victoria’s number one David Micheluzzi who defeated Sunshine Coast golfer Shae Wools-Cobb.

The teams had tied the final encounter at 4 apiece but Victoria, as a result of their superior individual contest record throughout the week of round robin play, managed to claim the title.

Victoria had made it to the finale with a hard-fought victory over West Australia in the last of the round robin series this morning, that match-up critical in just who would advance to the afternoon encounter against Queensland who had already played their way into the final.

Micheluzzi had also played a role in getting his side to the final against Queensland after holding off Australia’s leading world ranked amateur, Min Woo Lee, in the last of the morning matches to secure the 4-3 win over WA and therefore guarantee his side a place in the final.

For Micheluszzi it was an outstanding week having gone unbeaten in all of his matches. He and Queenslander Jed Morgan were the only two players to do so.

For Victoria it was their 4th win in this event in the last five years but the closeness of the final and that of their final round robin match suggests they had a tough battle to continue their impressive run.
