Toms was of course defeated by K.J. Choi at the first extra hole of a playoff at the TPC Sawgrass just five days ago but he has brushed aside that disappointment with two magnificent bogey free rounds of 62 to lead over Australians Steven Bowditch and John Senden, American Mark Wilson and South Korean Charlie Wi.
Other Australians are also doing well with Marc Leishman and Rod Pampling in a share of 9th position.
Bowditch put together a great round of 64 and although he trails the leader by seven it was nonetheless an encouraging performance by the talented Queenslander. Bowditch bogeyed his 17th hole after finding the left rough and then the greenside trap at the par four.
Senden played late on day two but put together a solid round of 66 to move into the fray.
Pampling is playing the event on invite as he is currently without status on the PGA Tour but has continued his very good record at Colonial. He has recorded three top six finishes in the event including when runner-up in 2008. Like Senden, Pampling lives in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
Stuart Appleby at 5 under and Adam Scott at 4 under are also well enough placed.
