Surprising reversal for Minjee Lee at Lake Merced

Just four days after her impressive victory at the L.A. Open in Los Angeles, Minjee Lee has struggled to an opening round of 76 at the MEDIHEAL Championship at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City just outside of San Francisco.

Lee finds herself well back in 104th place and already a massive nine shots behind the joint leaders, Anne Van Dam, So Yeon Ryu and Eun Hee Ji.

Lee has enjoyed success at the venue previously having won the 2012 US Junior Girls Championship and finished runner-up to Lydia Ko in this event last year but today she was unable to build on a good enough start and fell victim to the demanding layout.

An early birdie gave an indication that she might well be contending again so quickly after her victory last Sunday at the Wilshire Country Club but such hopes were short-lived as she recorded six bogeys and one further birdie in what was a surprising display.

Katherine Kirk, Hannah Green and Robyn Choi lead the Australians after their respective rounds of 74 while Su Oh’s recent struggles with form continued with a round of 79, recording a closing nine of 43 in the process.
