Iowa based Sydney golfer Ruben Sondjaja and his fellow New South Welshman, Dylan Perry are the two Australians to have made it to the 'Sweet Sixteen' at the Western Amateur at the Skokie Country Club in Glencoe in Illinois.

One more Australian, Minwoo Lee, has to wait until Friday morning Illinois time to see if he can pick up one of the three remaining places in the match play phase or Round of 16, the Western Australian one of four competing for those places tomorrow.

Sondjaja led with one hole to play but a quadruple bogey at the par 4 18th would see him record a round of 74 and at 11 under he would share 3rd position with American Nick Hardy and New Zealander Nick Voke.

The medallist over the 72 holes of stroke-play was Californian Norman Xiong.

The cut to make the final 16 who would advance to tomorrow’s match play would fall at 8 under and New South Wales’ Dylan Perry who just a few weeks ago finished runner-up at the British Amateur Championship finished at 9 under and safely graduated although West Australian Min Woo Lee will require in the playoff to decide his fate.

The match-play rounds will be played over the next two days to decide the winner of this historic event.
