The Australian World Amateur Team side has made a slow start in the defence of its 2016 title at Carton House near Dublin in Ireland.

The team of Min Woo Lee, David Micheluzzi and Shae Wools-Cobb are tied for 23rd and already nine shots behind the leaders Denmark after the opening round, Micheluzzi doing the best of the trio with a round of 69.

Lee and Wools Cobb produced rounds of even par 72 to be tied for 66th place, all three of the Australians playing the Montgomerie course at the 36-hole facility before tackling the O’Meara course tomorrow.

The leading two scores of the three in each round count towards the team score.

Micheluzzi, who has enjoyed a good season in 2018, produced seven birdies and an eagle in a round which had its share of brilliance but four bogeys and a double bogey saw him finish the day five shots behind the individual leader, India’s Rayhan Thomas.

The New Zealand side of Daniel Hillier, Denzel Ieremia and Kerry Mountcastle have begun well and are tied in 5th place and 7 under par, Hillier the best of that trio after his round of 4 under on the O’Meara course left him tied for 12th in the individual standings.
