Schonewille leads Aussies at British Am

The British Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland is underway with the opening round of the qualifying strokeplay completed overnight.

Two courses are being used in the 36 hole strokeplay phase, the Royal Portrush and Portstewart layouts with England's Daniel Brown, after a round of 66, heading the field.

Brown played his opening round at Royal Portrush and is ahead by one over a group of five players.

New South Welshman, Andrew Schonewille, leads the Australians after his opening round of 2 under 68 at Royal Portrush to be well positioned as he heads to Portstewart for tomorrow's second and final round of qualifying.

New South Wales' Cameron Davis is in 25th position at even par.

Dale Brandt Richards, Ben Eccles and D.J. Loypur are in a share of 39th while Geoff Drakeford is currently 92nd after his opening round of 73.

The leading 64 players at the completion of 36 holes earn their way into the match play phase.
