Sarah Jane Smith's good form continues

Caloundra's Sarah Jane Smith is playing some of the best golf of her career in 2013 and today she further confirmed that statement with when she consolidated her lead at the Victorian Women's Open at the Creek Course at 13th Beach on the Bellarine Peninsula of Victoria.

Despite a perhaps disappointing second round of 73, Smith had done enough with her opening round of 65 to hold on to a one shot lead as the event heads to the Beach Course at 13th Beach for the final 36 holes.

One of Australia's best golfers before an accident curtailed the latter part of her amateur career, Smith has played the LPGA Tour in recent years and although she has yet to break through on that Tour she is building towards a much better season in 2013. Last year Smith began working with the son of former PGA Tour player Larry Ziegler, Tony, and the results now appear to be flowing for her.

Smith birdied her final hole today to maintain the lead while the next best placed, Stacey Keating, bogeyed her 17th hole to lose the chance to share the lead into the weekend.

Both Smith and Keating are in a good vein of form at present, Keating one of Australian golf's brightest prospects having won twice on the Ladies European Tour in 2012 and recording top tens in three of her first four starts in 2013 and Smith putting together good finishes at the New Zealand Open and a very solid 15th last week in Canberra.

Sweden's Sophie Gustafson, amateur Grace Lennon, Kristie Smith and Jessica Speechley are next best just two shots behind the leader.

Tomorrow the Women will play the Beach Course with the men, their tee times alternated with those of the Victorian Men's Open field.
