Jack Thompson, from the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, has recorded a comfortable five shot victory at the Riversdale Cup at the Riversdale Golf Club in Mount Waverley in Melbourne, winning over Royal Melbourne’s William Heffernan while former Australian Amateur Champion Matias Sanchez finished 3rd another shot behind Heffernan.

Thompson’s second round of 64 had been enough to establish the four-shot margin he was able to maintain through 54 holes before increasing that today with a final round of 73.

The Riversdale Cup, second oldest amateur 72-hole golf tournament in Australia, is steeped in Australian amateur’s golf history having been first played in 1896 and boasting a honours roll that includes many of Australia’s leading amateur golfers, many of whom have gone on to significant professional careers.

The Women’s event was also won by a decisive margin with Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club’s Rebecca Kay winning by five over New Zealander Caryn Khoo and Victorian Jessica Pickwick.

The next event for players at this level in Australian Amateur golf will be when the South Australian Am Classic is played at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club in ten days time.
