Peter Lonard has taken full advantage of a late call-up to the Champions Tour 3M Championship in Minnesota, an opening round of 6 under par 66 leaving the 51-year old in a share of 2nd place.

Lonard only became aware of a start in this week's event late last week at the Senior Open Championship and without status on the Champions Tour was keen to take the opportunity.

The two-time Australian Open Champion made the near perfect start today with a birdie at the third followed by a hole in one at the 4th and added four more birdies and just the one bogey at the 10th.

Lonard trails first round leader Jerry Smith by two shots and is tied in 2nd place with Glen Day and Lee Janzen.

54-year old Smith has won one event on the Champions Tour but in fourteen starts this year has just the one top ten although he has played consistently.

David McKenzie is the only other Australian in the field the Victorian opening with a 5 over 77.
