TODAY I want to talk about thought processes when you’re playing and how they can have a really big impact on how you play.
Have you ever played a shot, hit it poorly then immediately said to yourself “I knew I was going to do that”?
Most of us have and it’s not really a surprise if you think about it.
What’s most likely happened is that you’ve created a mental representation of the shot you don’t want to hit then executed it perfectly.
You may not have wanted the end result but it was the shot you set yourself up to play mentally.
Given that you have to be thinking about something before each shot it’s a good idea to think about what you DO want to do rather than what you DON’T.
Part of every shot is deciding where you don’t want to hit the ball but the key is to deal with that first.
Once you’ve established in your own mind what you DON’T want to do then switch to thinking about what you DO want to do.
The way the human mind works is to focus on whatever it’s attention is drawn to. If yor last thought before you take the club away is to picture ethe water onthe3 left of the fairway then that’s what your mind is focussed on.
So the simple message is that you should always think in terms of what you do want to do not what you don’t want to do.
