Three places at the Open Championship are up for grabs at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney, those spots going to the players who finish inside the top ten but who are not already exempt for the 2018 Open Championship.
It is a process that the R&A, who own the Open Championship, has only gone to in recent years after moving away from stand alone International Final Qualifying at venues around world.
Interestingly, despite this week’s field containing 156 players, only three are currently exempt for next year’s Open at Carnoustie.
Jordan Spieth and Jason Day are there because of their standing in world ranking and via so many other categories while 17-year-old amateur, Yuxin Lin gets his opportunity to play what will be his second major championship after winning the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Wellington last month.
Lin earned starts at both the Masters and the Open Championship courtesy of his impressive win at Royal Wellington.
Similar opportunities to earn a place at the Open Championship will be made available at tournament venues in South Africa, Singapore, Japan, Korea, USA and France in the coming months.
