Fowler led into the final round by two shots over Lawrie but battled in today’s final round although having opened the tournament with a triple bogey on Friday today’s result will be both bitter and sweet.
For Fowler it was his best finish of the 2019 Staysure Tour season and his best finish since a victory at the 2018 Willow Senior Golf Classic almost twelve months ago.
Fowler has been a prolific money winner on the European Senior Tour having won six times since first joining the tour in 2010.
For Lawrie, the 1999 Open Champion, it was his first victory in the over fifties since turning 50 earlier this year and his first victory anywhere since his last European Tour victory in 2012.
Lawrie has struggled with foot injury in recent times but is delighted to have broken through for his first win at this level.
“I’ve not won since 2012 on the European Tour," said the winner. "Obviously, I’m a senior now and I’m playing senior events. I want to be one of the top players on the Staysure Tour and I want to be one of the top seniors, so this win is a massive step to doing that.
“My game has been getting betting for a few weeks and I’ve been telling people that I’m getting there and I’m going to win soon.
“The Senior Open was the first week where I felt my foot and my back were where I needed them to be. My surgeon, Gordon Mackay, said it would take a year for my foot to be right. I thought my career was over with my foot the way that it was, but Gordon did a great job.”
