NSW’s Nathan Barbieri is the lone Australian to make it to the finals of either the men’s or women’s Australian Amateur Championship following the completion of Quarter and Semi Finals today at the Woodlands Golf Club today .

Barbieri defeated Germany’s Jannick de Bryun at the last in this afternoon’s semi to set up a chance to win Australian golf’s greatest amateur title.

21 year old Barbieri will face Ireland’s Conor Purcell over 36 holes tomorrow, the battle between the 346th ranked in the world (Barbieri) and the 102d (Purcell) providing an opportunity for both to significantly elevate their standing in the game.

Barbieri, from the Monash Country Club in Sydney, completed a very successful trip to the US this past year with a runner-up finish in the Sahalee Championship and a third place at the Rice Planters Championship so despite his lower ranking he could well provide Conor with a very formidable opponent.

Both semis were decided at the final hole with Purcell outlasting another German in Michael Hirmer after defeating NSW’s Justin Warren in the morning quarter final.

Barbieri defeated Singaporean Donovan Lee to make it to his semi-final.

In the women’s event Japan’s Tsubasa Kajitani will take on Korea’s Yaeeun Hong after Hong defeated the lone remaining Australian, Stephanie Bunque, of Victoria in their semi final while Kajitana accounted for her fellow countrywoman Riri Sadoyama.
