Molinari leads in Portugal

Italy's Francesco Molinari has been one of the most consistent players on the European Tour this season but he has yet to win in 2009. After 36 holes of the Portugal Masters he has created the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Molinari leads the event at Vilamoura on the Algarve Peninsula of Portugal by one over Charl Schwartzel, although the talk of the day was the round of 62 by the pre tournament favourite Padraig Harrington.

Harrington is the leading world ranked player in the field but is playing this event for the first occasion although you wouldn't have know it today given the manner in which he handled the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course. A mistake free round of ten birdies outshone the impressive opening round of 63 by Molinari on Thursday.

Retief Goosen and Pablo Martin are one further back in a share of 4th.

Only Marcus Fraser of the Australasian brigade made the cut, improving to 29th with his second round of 67. Fraser played very consistently earlier in the season but in recent weeks has played poorly. This is a welcome return of form for him at an important time.
