Minjee Lee has recovered from a surprising opening round of 76 at the Mediheal Championship near San Francisco with a second round of 69 and although eight shots from the lead her performance today was more in keeping with her overall form in 2019.

The winner of last week’s L.A. Open and as a result the number two in the world, Lee opened her round today with a bogey but two birdies late in her opening nine along with an eagle at her 14th hole got her well inside her initial objective of making the cut now and she now shares 41st place with amongst others her fellow West Australian Hannah Green.

As a winner of the 2012 US Girls Junior Championship and runner-up to Lydia Ko in this event last year over the Lake Merced Golf Club layout Lee enjoys fond memories of the historic Daly City layout and is not without hope of working her way into contention on the demanding layout over the weekend.

The leader is a resurgent former world number one So Yeon Ryu who leads by one over Ryan O’Toole and Sei Young Kim with another five players a shot further back.

Six of the leading eight players are South Korean with Ryu, a two-time major champion, the best of them at the halfway stage.
