Minjee Lee has again put herself in the mix early in an LPGA Tour event with an opening round of 5 under par 67 at the Toto Japan Classic in Shiga in Japan, leaving the West Australian just two shots behind the leader, Korean So Yeon Ryu.

Already in second place on the 2018 LPGA Tour money list with 13 top tens including one win and three runner-up placing thus far this season, Lee was bogey free today and finds herself trailing Ryu who leads on her own at 7 under.

Japan’s Nasa Hataoka, and Koreans Jiyai Shin and In Kyung Kim are tied for second while Lee shares 5th place with Korean Sei Young Kim.

Sarah Jane Smith is the only other Australian in the field but she struggled to a round of even par and finds herself in a disappointing 53rd positiion on a day where 52 players broke par at the Seta Golf Club.

New Zealander Lydia Ko fared even worse with a round of 73 and is tied for 64th.
