Mickelson Masters an Air Swing in the Third Round

Phil Mickelson whiffed it on the opening hole at Augusta National.
Average club golfers around the world will take comfort from seeing one of the game’s greats take an air-swing during the third round of the Masters.

That’s what happened to three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson at the first hole (see below).

The 47-year-old - who made the cut on the number at 5 over - pulled his opening tee shot into trees right of the fairway.

Impeded by overhanging trees, Mickelson attempted a recovery shot but, remarkably, failed to make contact.

The 5-time major champion safely played out of trouble with his third shot but the ensuing triple bogey put paid to any slim chances he had of mounting a comeback at Augusta.

Mickelson eventually carded a round of 74 to drop to 7 over for the tournament.
