Micheluzzi Out Of Amateur Championship

A strong run came to an end in the quarter finals of The Amateur Championship for David Micheluzzi (Photo: Australian Master of the Amateurs)
A gutsy effort from David Micheluzzi was ultimately not enough as he lost his quarter-final match at The Amateur Championship, ending the Australian run for 2018.

Micheluzzi, one of Australia’s hottest amateur players this year, played some sterling golf to advance to the round of eight before Ireland’s Conor Purcell proved too strong.

An unusual start to the match saw Purcell wrack up a triple bogey seven at the second to send Micheluzzi 1up but the advantage didn’t last long as the Irishman birdied the next to get back to square.

He was never behind again going 2up with an eagle at the par-5 6thand 3up after a birdie at the eighth.

Micheluzzi clawed one back at the 9thand squared 10 but back to back birdies for Purcell at 11 and 12 put him 4up and in a strong position.

The margin was cut to three when Purcell made bogey at the 13thbut three consecutive halved holes saw him run out a 3&2 winner.

Later in the day Purcell succumbed to fellow Irishman Robin Dawson who will face Ernie Els’ nephew, Jovan Rebula, in tomorrow’s final.
