New Zealander Michael Hendry is one of three leaders at the Japan Tour’s Gateway to the Open Mizuno Open at the Royal Golf Club in Ibaraki, consecutive rounds of 70 having the 38 year-old from Auckland sharing the lead with Japan’s Teremichi Kazaku and Michio Matsumura.

Hendry has won only one title on the Japan Golf Tour (that coming in 2013) but has regularly contended since joining the tour in 2013.

Brendan Jones is at even par and four from the lead and heads the Australians, two double bogeys late in round two proving very costly. Jones is in a share of 16th position.

Now South Korean based Sydneysider, Won Jon Lee, began well yesterday with an opening round of 69 on the monster layout but today it was a different story, eight bogeys and a double bogey adding up to a round of 77 and a share of 34th.

Matthew Griffin is 46th and Queenslanders Brad Kennedy and Aaron Wilkin and WA’s Scott Strange are 59th.

Those players making the cut still have in mind the opportunity to play the Open Championship as this event affords the leading four players finishing inside the top 12 and not otherwise exempt to the Open Championship the right to play at Carnoustie in July.
