The World Number Two, who had used Nike clubs beyond its decision in 2016 to exit the golf equipment market and tested various types of irons earlier this year, will tee it up at this week’s Players Championship using TaylorMade clubs, ball and bag and announced the move via Twitter.
The monetary value of McIlroy's deal has not been confirmed, though several golf media outlets have reported it to be worth $100 million.
McIlroy - who had been using a Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic driver for much of 2017 - will now use TaylorMade's 2017 M2 Driver, M2 fairway woods, a mix of P750 and prototype irons, Milled Grind wedges and a TP5x ball.
"I'm really excited that I've teamed up with TaylorMade," McIlroy said at his press conference ahead of the Players Championship.
"I needed to address a few issues after Augusta, I alluded to the fact that I wasn't really happy with the golf ball I was playing and I needed to do something. I felt like I struggled in the wind so I sort of went back to the drawing board and tested for about 10 days pretty extensively after Augusta, worked with a lot of different things.
"I worked with the TaylorMade guys one day and started just with Trackman on the range and saw stuff with the golf ball, the new TP5x ball, that they have and I thought, wow, this is what I need."
"I came to the conclusion that that was the best way forwards for me to try and improve, to win more, try to get back to World Number One, try to win more majors, so I'm really excited about that."
Speculation had grown that an equipment switch was on the cards for McIlroy, who used TaylorMade’s M2 fairway woods at last month’s US Masters and, earlier this week, posted a slow-motion video of himself practising with TaylorMade’s M2 driver.
This week won’t mark the first time McIlroy has put TaylorMade equipment in his bag having played a TaylorMade driver at last October’s WGC-Champions event in China.
"I've been on tour 10 years and this is, it's very rare that you get excited about your equipment but I am," McIlroy said. "I feel like it's a new chapter in my life with a lot of stuff going on but I really feel, with the new equipment as well, it's hopefully going to take me to that next level."
