Today he opened the door for further success there when he opened with a round of 6 under par 65 at the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship at the Trinity Forest Golf Club in the outskirts of Dallas and finds himself in a share of 4th place and three from the lead of the winner of last year's Web.Com Tour Championship, Denny McCarthy.
Jones played this event well in 2018 when heading into the final round in 3rd place before eventually finishing 13th and having made nine of ten cuts to date in 2019 he was poised to do well this week.
Jones actually got to 7 under par through 16 holes of his round but a bogey at his 17th hole after failing to get up and down at the par 3 8th hole (he started at the 10th today) saw him finish with 65.
The highlight of Jones’ round came at the drivable par 4 14th hole when his tee shot finished 10 feet from the hole then converting for eagle.
He would then birdie his 15th and 16th holes before the dropped shot at his 17th hole.
McCarthy leads by two over Tom Hoge and Tyler Duncan but amongst those tied with Jones at 6 under is the pre-tournament favourite Brooks Koepka who also got to 7 under before a late bogey.
Other Australians in the field are Cameron Davis who is in 22nd position after his round of 67 while Rod Pampling was the next best after his round of 70.
Marc Leishman was in the event and expected to be one of the favourites before being forced to withdraw through back injury on the eve of the event.
