Lyle and Sim return at Midwest Classic

The Web.Com Tour is in Overland Park in Kansas for the Midwest Classic, the event which sees the return to tournament golf of Australians Jarrod Lyle and Michael Sim.

29 months after being forced from the PGA Tour with a recurrence of his ongoing battle with Leukaemia, Lyle returns to tournament golf in the USA although he has played two events in Australia, one of which involved an emotional and impressive performance at the Australian Masters where he made the cut.

Lyle will play several Web.Com Tour events as he prepares for a return to the PGA Tour where he will have a certain level of status through a medical exemption carried over following his departure from the PGA Tour.

The winner of two events on the Web.Com Tour earlier in his career, Lyle has twenty events to earn $US283,000 when he does re-commence his PGA Tour campaign in order to regain his full status.

The first of those is likely to be early in the new season beginning in October of this year.

This week's tournament is being played at the Jack Nicklaus designed Nicklaus Golf Club at Lions Gate in Overland Park and Lyle is playing it for the first occasion as the when the inaugural staging of the event was on it was after Lyle had made it to the PGA Tour.

Lyle has shown, when he is at his best, both medically and golf-wise, he is a very fine player and all will be hoping he regains both.

Other Australasians who will tee it up with Lyle this week are Rod Pampling, James Nitties, Alistair Presnell, Nick O'Hern, Steve Allan, Cameron Percy, Gavin Coles. Aron Price, Adam Crawford, Steve Alker, Peter Lonard, Michael Sim, Ashley Hall and Ben Campbell.

Following Alker's runner-up finish last week he is now assured of a return to the PGA Tour having won earlier in the season.

Michael Sim's return is also noteworthy. The talented West Australian has not played a PGA or Web.Com Tour event since towards the end of 2012 so the previous Web.Com Tour Battlefield Promotion recipient will be another whose return is watched with interest.

That Sim is a previous winner of this event, having won its inaugural staging, no doubt was a key to him gaining a start in the event.

New Zealander Ben Campbell managed to secure a start via Monday qualifying.
