Australia's Lucas Herbert is in a share of 14th place and four shots from the lead after his opening round of 2 under par 69 at the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open in Italy.

Herbert, who is playing the European Tour event on invite, birdied his final two holes after starting at the 10th hole on the stunning seaside layout of the Verdura Golf Club in Agrigento, Sicily.

Herbert’s solid start comes after three consecutive missed cuts for the still only 22-year-old who is still looking for his first win as a professional.

His best finish to date has been a runner-up finish at last year’s NSW Open although a more significant effort was his 3rd placing at the World Super 6 Perth in February.

Nick Cullen is one further back after his round of 70, Marcus Fraser 71, Matthew Millar 72, Jordan Zunic 73, Jason Scrivener and Jack Munro 76.

New Zealander Josh Geary recorded a round of 75.

The joint leaders after the opening day are Denmark's Lucas Bjerregaard, a winner of last year’s Portugal Masters, and England’s Ryan Evans, a graduate from last year’s Challenge Tour, after their rounds of 66.
