LPGA's final event before Kraft Nabisco

The LPGA Tour is in California this week for the third staging of the Kia Classic, this time at the Legends Course at La Costa Resort and Spa near San Diego.

The layout, formerly known as the South Course at La Costa, has undergone changes in the past twelve months with four of its holes having been rebuilt as part of an overall upgrade of the iconic golfing facility.

Germany's Sandra Gal is the defending champion this week although her victory last year was achieved at the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms.

Gal has had a relatively slow start to the 2012 season and might struggle to successfully defend her title.

With just one week remaining before the LPGA Tour's first major championship of the year at next week's Kraft Nabisco, the tournament has attracted a strong field, understandable given the fact that last week's RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup was the first event in a month.

Most players will feel the need to play this week in order to have their game at a peak for the big test at Mission Hills.

The field is headed by Yani Tseng who last week became the fastest player on the LPGA Tour to reach US$ 8 million in earnings when she won the Founders Cup in Phoenix.

Na Yeon Choi and Ai Miyazato who tied for second last week are also in the field.

The field includes Australians Karrie Webb, Katherine Hull, Lindsey Wright, Sarah Kemp, Sarah-Jane Smith and Wendy Doolan.
