You may have noticed some high-profile golf types taking part in The Longest Day challenge recently, a fundraising initiative that is now in its fifth year and is open to golfers all across Australia.
The concept is simple: play 72 holes of golf in a single day and get as many people as possible to sponsor you for your efforts.
The money raised this year goes to Cancer Council Victoria and Cancer Council NSW to fund an ongoing study investigating immunotherapy for more effective cancer treatment.
The project will explore whether a patient’s immune response can be enhanced, and thus help stop malignant tumours growing and spreading throughout the body.
Started in 2013, The Longest Day Challenge has grown significantly over the past four years and in 2016 raised $100,000 towards Cancer Council Victoria research.
In 2017 the target for Victoria alone was $200,000 and with the campaign running all of December it had already surpassed $287,000 as of December 20.
Australian touring professional Stacey Peters and Melbourne media personality Andy Maher are among those who’ve already completed the challenge in 2017, their involvement helping to raise the profile of the day which both Cancer Council Victoria and Cancer Council NSW hope will continue to grow.

Being part of the challenge is simple and you can register your event, and set up a fundraising page, at www.longestday.org.au.
A minimum of two golfers are required and, of course, access to four tee times across the day.
You can expect to walk around 30 kilometres during the challenge and those who’ve completed it say while it’s physically taxing it is also highly rewarding.
