Royal Melbourne Golf Club member Darcy Brereton has taken full advantage of his knowledge of one of Australia’s best golfing layouts by taking a six-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Australian Master of the Amateurs at the famed sandbelt layout.

23 year-old Brereton, who was one of only three players to break 70 in yesterday’s opening round when establishing a three shot lead with an opening 66, extended that advantage today with a second round of 68 to lead over American Canon Claycomb.

Victorian David Micheluzzi and American Shintaro Ban are another shot back in a share of 3rd position although seven shots from the leader.

Brereton is the son of former top jockey Danny Brereton and although he has produced several solid finishes in leading amateur events he is ranked well down in the Australian amateur rankings so this is a performance of some surprise and some note.

Australia’s leading ranked player, Min Woo Lee, shares 6th position while the leading world ranked amateur in the field, American Dylan Meyer, is in 8th position and ten shots from the lead.
