Leading seeds tumble at Aussie Amateur

Victorian teenager Ryan Ruffels has created a minor upset in round one of the Australian Amateur Championship, the 64th qualifier defeating the leading qualifier, Britain's Ryan Evans, 3&2 at the Grange Golf Club this morning.

Ruffels is considered perhaps the most talented young golfers in Australia finishing as the second leading amateur at the Australian Open so while it was a surprise to defeat the leading qualifier there is little question of the potential of the American raised 16 year old.

The second leading qualifier, Kazuki Higa of Japan, was another to be eliminated when he was beaten by Allan Haughie of the ACT

Lucas Herbert, the third qualifier, is also out of the contest after he was defeated by Australia's leading ranked amateur Taylor MacDonald who had only just scrapped into the match play field.

That leaves American David Snyder as the leading remaining qualifier after his defeat of Charlie Dann of Queensland.

5th seed Geoff Drakeford is also through after his defeat of Mitchell Gannon of Sydney.

With the Adelaide heatwave continuing into the afternoon, the remaining 32 players are now resting before tackling the second round tomorrow.
