Japan Tour plays PGA Championship

The Japan Golf Tour plays another of its significant events this week when the Japan PGA Championship kicks off on the northern island of Hokkaido.

The tournament is being played at the Eniwa Country Club, a venue being used for the first occasion for an event of this standing.

Two time winner Shingo Katayama would have been the defending champion but he is in the US preparing for the US Open next week.

Several other players also heading to New York however are teeing it up this week including Japan Tour stalwart New Zealander David Smail.

Other Australasians in the tournament include the leading Australasian on the 2009 Japan Golf Tour money list, Brendan Jones, Craig Parry, Steve Conran, Craig Parry, Paul Sheehan, Wayne Perske, Eddie Lee and Scott Laycock.
