Herbert and Ruffels qualify at US Junior

Victorians Lucas Herbert and Ryan Ruffels have advanced to the match-play phase of the US Junior Amateur Championship at Martis Camp Club in Truckee in California, Herbert bouncing back from his opening round of 74 to finish in a share of 14th while Ruffles finished one shot further back in a share of 18th position.

Herbert finished runner-up at last week's Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego and has emerged in 2013 as one of the elite of Australian amateur golf. He finished runner-up earlier this year in Tier 2 event on the PGA Tour of Australiasia at the Heritage Classic.

15 year old Ruffels, who made it into the event after finishing as the leading qualifier at his venue in Bremerton in Washington, is the son of tennis stars Ray Ruffles and Anna Maria (nee Fernandez ) and was a talented tennis player himself before focusing on golf.

Born in Florida, Ruffels moved with his family back to Australia in 2009 and he is now establishing himself amongst Australia's best amateurs and is a member of the National Squad. Last week he finished 7th at the Callaway Junior World event.

The event now enters the first round of elimination match-play where the leading 64 qualifiers do battle.
