Michael Hendry has outlasted former Sydneysider Won Joon Lee in the round of 32 to be the only Australasian remaining at the Japan Tour's lucrative ISPS Handa Match Play Championship in Chiba.

The reigning New Zealand Open champion was 2 down to Lee through 11 holes at Hamano Golf Club but rallied to win 1 up and will now face 21-year-old Japan Tour rookie Rikuya Hoshina in the Round of 16.

Matthew Griffin was the only other Australasian survivor from earlier rounds to play today and he took on South African Shaun Norris in another close encounter, which Norris won 2&1 after only one hole had separated the pair through 14 holes.

Pre-tournament favourites, Hideto Tanihara and Yuta Ikeda enhanced each of their claims to earn one of the two captain’s pick for the International Presidents Cup side, which will be announced tomorrow, by both advancing to the round of 16.

Tanihara and Ikeda narrowly missed out on one of the 10 automatic Presidents Cup selections that were finalised yesterday, finishing 12th and 13th respectively.
