Football star denied entry into golf club

ENGLAND and Liverpool football legend Steven Gerrard has had his application to join an elite golf club denied after a 2013 incident.

ONE of England's greatest ever football players has had his application to join an elite golf club north of Liverpool rejected, due to his involvement in an off-field brawl in 2013.

Former captain of his country and Liverpool FC legend Steven Gerrard applied to become a member at Hillside Golf Club in Southport.

The Mirror reports that the 35-year-old had the recommendation of fellow Liverpool champions Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen, but a misdemeanour away from the field is believed to be the reason that the esteemed club has turned down Gerrard's application.

In August of 2013, Gerrard was involved in a scuffle with a hotel owner, with grainy CCTV footage emerging of the incident when Gerrard was on a night out with his wife.

The footballer was eventually cleared of any undoing, but it is understood that the committee at Hillside watched the footage when deliberating over Gerrard's application.

It is believed the committee decided against allowing the Champions League-winning captain a place in the golf club due to the potential damage it could do to Hillside's image.

The Mirror reports that a source at the club said: "They’re worried he’ll damage the club’s reputation. Apparently they viewed the footage and decided he couldn’t play."

It may have come as a shock to the high-profile footballer to be disallowed entry into an elite golf club, but it's not the first time this has happened in recent memory.

After last season's dramatic saga where Tom Brady and his New England Patriots were accused of deflating footballs in the NFL playoffs, the star quarterback was denied entry into the outrageously exclusive Country Club of Brookline in Massachusetts.

The 133-year-old club has more than 1,300 members, a large majority allegedly weary of the public stature of Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen.

Members and directors alike were subsequently reluctant to let the pair join as members - despite the fact their house backs onto the course.
