Day top 10 as rain stops play at Pebble Beach

JASON Day was among those to complete his opening round at the Pebble beach Pro-Am where heavy rain stopped play late in the day.

JASON Day has opened with a four birdie, two bogey round of 69 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to be in a share of eighth position when play was brought to a halt due to inclement weather.

Several greens at the three layouts used for the tournament were unplayable as heavy rains battered the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach courses.

In cold, wet and windy conditions, Day played the Monterey Peninsula Country Club in today’s opening round and began with a birdie at the par-5 10th hole and generally played well in what were particularly demanding conditions.

His effort was a good bounce back from a missed cut at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines two weeks ago and he will be glad to have completed his round.

Now out of the weather and in the clubhouse, he has the advantage over those yet to complete their rounds who have been left to ponder their fate for the remainder of the day.

The joint leaders when play was suspended were Rick Lamb, Seung-Yul Noh and Joel Dahmen although in a group just one behind is Jordan Spieth who is also playing the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. The World Number Six has two holes to play of round one.

Also in that group is New Zealand left hander Tim Wilkinson and Americans Nick Watney and Mark Hubbard.

New South Wales golfer, Brett Drewitt, is tied for 22nd after his opening round of 71 at Spyglass Hills Golf Club with Matt Jones the next best of the Australians in 37th positon after his round of even par 72 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Geoff Ogilvy is 1-over through 13 at Moneterey Peninsula CC to be T58 while John  Senden and Cameron Percy have both completed their rounds at that mark.

Stuart Appleby is 3-ver through 15 at Spyglass Hill, Rod Pampling is 3-over through 13 at Monterey Peninsula CC and is in the club house at Spyglass Hill at 4-over.

Greg Chalmers and Cameron Smith have both completed 15 holes of their opening rounds, Chalmers 4-over at Pebble Beach and Smith 5-over at Spyglass Hill.
