What Money Can Buy: Bale's Backyard Blitz

It’s the stuff of nightmares for the pros who play it every year but Welsh soccer star Gareth Bale seems a glutton for punishment after building a replica of TPC Sawgrass’ famed Island Green in his backyard.

Bale’s day job at Spanish team Real Madrid pays handsomely and the self-confessed golf nut has chosen to spend a good chunk of change building himself a backyard playground that includes three golf holes.

Sawgrass’ 17th is the first to be completed at the South Wales property Bale calls home but will apparently soon be joined by replicas of both the par-4 11th at Augusta National and the par-3 8th Postage Stamp from Royal Troon.

"I love playing golf,” Bale told English newspaper The Daily Express in 2015.

“I love the sport, I love the fact that you can just get away from everything, be with your friends, and no one can come over to you on a golf course."

Pictures emerged during the week of the finished project, complete with front bunker and Pete Dye’s famous railroad ties.

The photo of the completed hole appeared in the Twitter feed of UK publication Golf News though it is unclear where the image came from.
