In front of crowds totalling nearly 20,000, the Englishman cruised to 12 under par for the tournament, breaking away from compatriot John Parry (67) and Australian Richard Green (65) with an eagle, five birdies and three bogeys.
Home favourites Thomas Bjørn and Søren Kjeldsen are four and five under respectively, while Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke is three under, but Andreas Hartø stole the headlines despite missing the halfway cut on home soil.
“I had a good holiday last week, which is always nice mid-season,” said Horsey. ”You get a little bit burnt out sometimes and I was getting frustrated with it, so it was nice to put the clubs away for a week and get away and forget about golf. It seems to have done the job. You’ve got to enjoy being in this position – you’re not going to turn down leading a golf tournament heading into the weekend.”
Green has not played for several weeks and was delighted with his form. “It’s a bit of a surprise as I’ve just come off three weeks of not playing and just caddying for my fiancée. I’m hitting it well and putting well, so I’ll take it.
“It’s freshened up the mind a little bit. At this time of year the tournaments are a bit thin if you’re not in the Majors or the WGCs, so it’s been a good break before a busy end to the season. You see the game in a different light when you’re caddying. You get your strategy mind going. I’ve always found after I’ve caddied for her that my mind is working better.”
Victorian Terry Pilkadaris, who has been playing Challenge Tour events of late, is in a share of 4th position and four from the lead.
UK based Victorian Daniel Gaunt is two shots further back and West Australian Jason Scrivener another two back again.
