Australian hopes for Open start

The leading four players inside the top 12 at this week's Quicken Loans National event at the Congressional Country Club and not otherwise qualified for next month's Open Championship will earn the right to play at Royal Liverpool.

With Jason Day and Marc Leishman the only Australians playing this week who are already exempt for Open Championship, many have the chance to force their way into the field for the third major of the year beginning on July 17th.

Greg Chalmers' great start this morning to lead the event has him well positioned to take advantage of the newly introduced qualifying criteria, although Stuart Appleby, Marc Leishman, Oliver Goss and Geoff Ogilvy have also made good starts and at the completion of day one's play are in 16th position at 1 under 70.

Brady Watt, like his fellow West Australian, Goss, is an invite to the event and both have made solid starts with Watt recording an opening 71.
