The men played both their second and third rounds today reducing the field from 32 to 8 heading into tomorrow's quarter finals while the women, who had only 32 qualify for the match play phase, played just theri second round today and they too will play their quarter finals tomorrow.
The most significant upset amongst the men was that of the leading qualifier Cameron Smith who was beaten in this afternoon's round of 16 by New South Welshman, Ricky Kato, at their final hole.
Kato showed good form at last week's Master of the Amateurs where his final round of 67 was by the best of the day and then qualified in 16th position for this event.
Australia's leading ranked amateur golfer at the end of 2011, Matt Stieger, was convincingly beaten by Germany's Marcel Schneider.
Another other major upset of the afternoon was the defeat of Australian representative Todd Sinnott of Victoria by New South Welshman Daniel Bringolf.
New Zealand Amateur Champion Matt Perry went down to Queenslander Christopher-John Harrop after Harrop's morning match went to the 25th hole before he made it to the round of 16. It has been a long week for Harrop as he was forced into a playoff in the qualifying just to get into the match play field.
Harrop will play fellow Queenslander Daniel Nisbet in tomorrow monring's quarter final.

In the Australian Women's Amateur Championship, last year's runner-up Minjee Lee of Western Australia easily accounted for Kotone Hori of Japan by 7&5, giving every indication that she could well go one better this year than her final loss to Ashlee Dewhurst in 2011.
In form golfers, Breanna Elliott, who led the qualifiers on Wednesday, and last week's Lake Macquarie Amateur winner, Whitney Hillier, made it through to the quarter finals as has the brilliant 14 year old New Zealander Lydia Ko.
