The Australian team of Scott Hend and Wade Ormsby are through to the knockout stage of the Golf Sixes Cascai in Portugal, edging clear of the English women’s team in a playoff to decide which of those two teams would survive the round robin qualifying stage.

The format involves teams of two pitted against the three other teams in an alternate shot format in their groups of four, a total of 16 teams involved in the preliminary rounds.

Unable to separate the two sides after total points and holes won were counted the two teams took to the playoff and although the first hole was halved, Scott Hend’s approach at the second finished closer that his English counterpart and he and Ormsby are through.

Australian had beaten Wales, then lost to the German women’s side before securing a halved match against France and entering the playoff to decide who would advance.

Each side of two players played three matches on the opening day and those successful will now play the quarters and if successful the semis and final on Saturday

Australia will tackle the highly ranked Spanish team of Jorge Campillo and Nacho Elvira on Saturday morning.
