Time for a review by a golfer who is neither a member of Rutherglen nor a sandscrape sceptic!Having played some 60 Vic. sandscrapes,R'glen is the best design I have seen, incorporating several teasing short holes with a succession of long tough holes, especially 5-7 which are made longer than the nominal length by being partly uphill.Overall it is an interesting and enjoyable challenge, not exactly a hill course but with substantial undulations and elevation changes. The 5 par 3 holes range from 147-236m.,including uphill, downhill and risk/reward questions;an excellent group of holes with the shortest (9)a lovely hole, tight to the OOB left and essentially inviting the risk taker;the longest(17)downhill challenging you to go for broke. Other very good holes are;9th-a short par 4,bending left around ditch and OOB,with a mature large tree centre fairway;reward for those brave and skilled enough to hugthe OOB line,a straight short pitch to the scrape;for the more cautious,a tricky lofted over the tree is required.THe 16th,dogleg right, sharply to a ledge green surrounded by mature trees, only 320m.,apparently simple but posing problems to even the low handicapper. To top this off,the scrapes are very good, with the approach areas giving a reliable bump and run for approach shots. The setting Is lovely and the hospitality in the best traditions of Vic. country sand scrape clubs.Quite simply a treat in all respects!

Rutherglen measures 5279m Par 69 with five par 3s ranging from 147-236m, eleven par 4s ranging from 233-380m and two par 5s ranging from 455-493m. Course has 18 black soil scrapes with no bunkers and fairly short holes for its par. Most holes play straight with the flags visible from the teebox like the slightly uphill 343m 10th (index 6) and the 493m 7th (index 5). Basic golf facilities here with $10 fees. The layout is undemanding with 8 out of eleven par 4s less than 320m in length. Course access is from Murray Street near the Rutherglen Estate Cellar Door. To be fair, if you visit Rutherglen, it will be for wines rather than its golf course! Rutherglen is a small town of around 2000 people approximately 180m above sea level about 15 minutes south of Corowa and less than 30 minutes from either Wangaratta or Wodonga. Closest grass green courses are the 27-hole at Corowa to the north-west of Rutherglen or Howlong, both on the NSW side of the Murray River.

living in rutherglen i have played here many times. Mostly play my comp golf at howlong, however rutherglen is a good club to tune your skills. it is certainly not the best course around. with little money they rely on volunteer work to keep the course up to scratch and during winter this course actually looks a treat. the local players are genuinely nice guys and if you are looking for a hit then this is not a bad place to go. standout hole is the undulating long ( approx 495m) par 5 7th. extremely tough to get on in three due to the scrapes but a birdie here could kick start your round. also runs along a fenceline so a big score on this hole is not out of the question.
