Alexandra Golf Club
18 Holes
PAR 72
5528 M

A hidden gem of a golf course located just two hours' drive from Melbourne via the Maroondah Highway.

Alexandra Golf Club offers a unique test as its layout weaves inside and outside of the local horse racing track, which is in play on more than half the holes.

Eighteen wide grassed fairways, gently undulating and never crowded, make golfing in Alexandra worth a day trip from Melbourne.

Clubs and buggies may be hired and the licensed clubroom has barbecue facilities.

Many of the fairways are dominated by giant River Red Gums that demand you get your drive positioned well, and there are several large dams that you need to avoid.

A great little course that has a layout that will test most golfers without being too demanding. Some greens require precise approaches and although small have difficult slopes that are deceptive. A good day out.

Alexandra measures 5462m Par 70 with five par 3s ranging from 130-175m, ten par 4s ranging from 280-400m and three par 5s ranging from 439-483m. The distinct feature of this course is the former racecourse guardrail which is in play on most holes. The local rule has been recently changed to allow the player the option of replaying the shot if their ball strikes the race track fence. The tree-lined style layout has a mixture of common couch and winter rye grass fairways and teebeds. The smallish-sized bent grass greens are relatively smooth but have some poa in them which will create a bumpy roll. The greens have well manicured rye grass surrounds. In terms of hazards, there are 3 large storage dams/ponds within the former racecourse guardrail which can come into play on the 11th, 15th and 16th. There are no bunkers on the course. Gentle doglegs feature on this course with many flags not visible from the teebed. Highlights include: the 396m slight bend right 6th (index 1) with a blind teeshot over a crest to a right sloping fairway to a small green; the 389m straight 11th (index 3) with a red-staked pond 20-60m short of the green within the leftside rough; the 175m 12th (index 9) with the green slightly above the tee mound; the 335m slight bend left 13th (index 12) with a 2-tier front sloping 20m long green with the large storage pond behind the green; the 483m straight 15th (index 10) is the longest hole on the course and has its fairway between the red-staked ponds/storage dams left and right of the fairway; and the 310m straight 16th (index 17) has the red-staked storage dam along the leftside off the tee to avoid. Despite many short par 4s less than 340m in length, the course's best attributes are the variations in their par 3s. Played here 29/09/2012 with $18 green fees. Course access is from Gordon Street approximately 240m above sea level. Overall, the Par 70 layout at Alexandra is a decent course without being too challenging even from the back plates and plays similar to the other nearby country layouts at Nagambie and Eildon, however, the greens here are in better condition that at Nagambie and Eildon. Alexandra is a small town in the rich pastoral land at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range of around 2500 people. There is no proshop but the club can be reached on (03) 5772 1570 on the weekends.
