Sandhurst is Melbourne’s newest private, members only golf course.

The aim for the Sandhurst North Course is to build upon the indelible characteristics of the old links. The tight lies with the bump-and-run, the jigger to hard running greens, makes a round on the links positively the supreme golfing test.

Peter Thomson’s philosophy is rooted firmly in the traditional style of the Scottish Isles based on the belief that golf is a game played not in the air, but along the ground.

Designed for those who aspire to the best in life, Sandhurst Club is Melbourne’s first totally private master-planned club community. Exclusive yet affordable, active yet relaxing, convenient yet removed from the worries of the world.

It’s an unparalleled estate lifestyle offering home and land owners all the benefits of private club living – beautiful landscaped, environmentally friendly surroundings, a wealth of recreational facilities including a Peter Thomson design links golf course, cafes, restaurants, gymnasium, indoor pool and tennis court, 24 hours security, and a level of personal concierge service you’d expect from a club of such exclusivity.

Sandhurst Club also features a range of reception and conference venues for parties, corporate business events, weddings, christenings and other celebrations. Explore the delights of Sandhurst Club, home of the PGA and located in Skye near the aquatic delights of Port Phillip Bay, Carrum and Patterson Lakes.

Few admin/pro shop issues to start my experience. They never told us the bunkers were GUR and being fixed up (currently filled with bitumen). Tee time stuff up at 8:28am not managed well by the course Marshall at all. Overall the fairways + greens were in fantastic condition. Not much to get that excited about the course layout, prefer the championship course. For $65 I'd prefer to head down to Mornington for the great courses down there.

Like the North Course at Sandhurst, the Champions (south) Course is overdue for a review given the appointment of a new curator early in 2013. The course has an interesting and varied layout that meanders around a housing estate. It can be a beast on a windy day especially from the black tees. Overall the course is in great shape with members and guests alike commenting positively on the improvements made under the new greens superintendent. Grass quality in all playing areas is excellent and drainage has always been good on this course but has improved further, especially on and around the greens. A bunker renewal program is underway that will deliver conistency for those visiting the sand.

This course has not been rated since September 2013 so given a new currator was appointed early in 2013, a fresh review is necessary. Under a previous currator, course conditioning slipped badly with drainage issues, inconsistent grass coverage on fairways, greens & surrounds and inconsistent bunker quality. All those things needing remedial work has or is being addressed and the course is coming up a treat. All grassed areas have improved out of sight, a drainage program and proper maintenance have improved playing conditions greatly and a bunker renewal program is underway. Bad comments about course condition are a thing of the past.

Played in a 4BBB Stableford Pairs comp and scored 47 pts as a pair. Course was in OK condition given the hot weather in Victoria over the past few weeks. Greens were not in the best conditions. Though the bunkers make the holes look scary, I didn't find they really came into play for me. Some challenging + long par 4's were refreshing. For $80 as an RACV member, I still find this course expensive for what it is.

To me this is a course that lacks cohesion. There doesn't seem to be any over riding thought process behind the design other than they had room for two golf courses (my review for the north is also posted). I played here in January 2014. The clubhouse is excellent but I could happily not return to the golf course with so many other fantastic options south of Melbourne. The back 9 in particular is very weak. It seems to me that the entire course has had too many trees removed, or not enough native bush replanted. The bunkers lack any real inspiration and are quite hard to actually get into surrounding the green. The rough would add visual depth but it was very short when I played and didn't offer any hindrance. There's also a common thread in these reviews that pitch marks and divots affect the course. For that to appear in the reviews over years clearly means it's a maintenance issue. This course has fallen from 70 to 86 in Golf Digest's top 100 rankings and I think that is a pretty fair reflection having played the majority of others at a similar ranking.

Hard to know what to say about this course - could be so much better, yet it's an enjoyable enough experience to not want to speak too ill of it. Teed off the 10th, which is a very tough proposition first-up but a great hole. The back nine is great, with a premium on hitting the ball in the right spot to score. Nothing special about the greens, but they ran true and the bunkers were well kept. 18 is a top dog-leg finishing hole where I imagine quite a few great scores have turned into less-so. The other highlight was the 14th, a driveable par-four where risk and reward are separated by only a few yards. The front nine wasn't so impressive, save for the 9th. The first is a gentle start, as is the 2nd. Now for the 3rd...I cannot understand any bouquets for this hole, only brickbats. The wall is a contrived monstrosity which can only owe to a homage to the Road Hole and Thomson's love of the Open Championship. It looks unfinished and ungainly. Yuck. Holes 4-8 have nothing particularly to them, and are saved by the 9th which is a magnificent dogleg par-five where the bigger hitters can chew off as much as they want, with fear of finding a watery grave. The green is protected by water left and a significant creek in front, with no bail-out right either. A perfect closing hole, which it was for us starting on the 10th - not to say 18 isn't as well. It had been a reasonably wet week but expected more from the greens, and some of the bunkers were hard/waterlogged as well. Possibly a more enjoyable experience in summer but can't see the attraction of joining here for the price, apart from access to two courses and a well-appointed clubhouse.
