COURSE DETAILS

The National Golf Club is a 54 hole private members golf club, providing three distinct golfing challenges (Old Course, Moonah Course and Ocean Course). The three courses have been designed by three of the world's leading golf architects - Greg Norman, Robert Trent Jones Jr and Peter Thomson. As such each of the courses, although located very closely to one another, offer the golfer a range of golfing experiences. The Ocean Course, which opened for play on December 26, 2000, is a classic Thomson, Wolveridge and Perrett design. Many Thomson courses include links style pot bunkers placed strategically in the middle of fairways tempting the golfer to go for it or lay up. The Ocean is no exception and many of the green surrounds also are framed by this style of bunker. The course is a gentler test than the Moonah with a number of short par 4's but still has its fair share of tougher holes. The National, located on the Mornington Peninsula approximately 80 minutes from the city of Melbourne, is a must play for any keen golfer.

Moonah
Played here for the first time 3 weeks ago and what a fantastic golf course. It lived up to its ranking and is one of the best and most enjoyable courses I've ever played. The course conditioning was outstanding and the design of some of the holes were absolute works of art. Playing here is a truly memorable experience and I just hope I get a chance to play it and the other courses sometime again in the future.

Moonah
Played the Moonah for the first time yesterday and i was absolutely impressed by the flawless conditioning, great hole designs and the variety of holes. Good mix of short par 4's to 400m brutal ones. Par5's had good variety in the way the holes contour and elevation changes as well.Elevated tees on some holes have spectacular views of the ocean and the natural sand dune surrounds.Greens were very true but not lightning fast and the bunkers seem to be torn into the fairways with rough surrounds. An absolute must play course for the golfing enthusiast.

Ocean
Just a fabulous course. Fun and challenging. I've now played it 6 times with different wind conditions on all. My god I'd love to be a member here. For me the 17th hole is just a cracker. I don't agree with Thomson's philosophy overall but he has created some magnificent works and this is an under-rated one.

Moonah
Played the National Moonah course yesterday in the afternoon after playing the Old Course in the morning. Haven't changed my thoughts on this course since last post I love it. In the top 5 courses I have ever played and is probably my favourite to play. Like the Old course, conditioning, layout, and location are absolutely flawless. Design is superb and this is one of the Shark's best. (7th best in Australia speaks for itself) The course plays long, length and accuracy are required, anything wayward, outside of the first cut of rough, is lost or unplayable. The wind was up yesterday afteroon and made the course tough, being a links style course it is very exposed. The course is designed to fit in beautifully with its natural surrounds, using the contours of the land to shape the holes. It has some great natural elevation changes throughout the entire 18 holes. The bunkering is as natural as you will find anywhere, blending into the rough, green complexes and course landscape. There are many tee shots through dune and tree lined shoots' and some blind shots as well, adding another difficulty factor to this course. Carts are not allowed on this course unless you are a certain age and have a medical exemption. We didn't fit this criteria so yesterday this course was a very hard slog walking it in the heat and wind after playing the Old Course before. Players who aren't long off the tee will find this course really tough, others who are longer than average will enjoy it and the challenges it presents. National Moonah is a great course and a must play, but it's not for everyone.

Old
Played the Old Course yesterday in the morning and the Moonah Course in the afternoon, what an experience. It was my first look at the Old and have to say it was everything I had hoped for and more. It is up there with the best courses I have played, definitely in my top 10. Have played Cape Schanck a fair bit and loved the course this is 100 times better. Conditioning, layout, and location are absolutely flawless. Design is superb and I am a massive fan of RTJ jnr. You have to be so accurate when hitting to the greens and this is where I was caught out yesterday. Hit it to the wrong section of green and good luck think I had 4×3 putts and a 4 putt. What I did like about the green complexes were that you could actually use the slopes to your advantage, bringing the ball closer to the hole from different angles, instead of just going straight at the hole. The wind got up yesterday morning and made the course even tougher, some of the holes are so high up they are very exposed. Wouldn't not enjoy playing it in a gale. This course is so unique and is so different to anything I have ever played obviously Cape Schanck being the exception. Whilst the course got the better of me yesterday I think I would go pretty well second time around. If you are hitting it well and put some imagination into your shots I don't think it is an overly difficult course, but, as mentioned, you need local knowledge and get your approach shots on the same level as the pin. The member I played with yesterday had a rangefinder, which was so much more effective than a gps, as a lot of approaches you can only see the top of the flag. I would recommend this Course a must play for every golfer, do everything you can to get a game there, just for the experience. Once you are booked in, pray to the golfing gods for a calm weather day!

Old
An incredible golf course. Challenging layout and lightning greens. Weather conditions were pretty good so I can only imagine how difficult it must play in the wind.
