I've never heard much about Portland Golf Club so was really pleasantly surprised.

The course is situated beside the ocean, front 9 is shorter and has some lovely ocean views, back 9 more difficult & works it's way away from the ocean.

The course is relatively flat with some minor undulations.

The tees are couch, mostly kikuyu fairways & tight bent greens & surrounds.

The course is heavily treed in some areas with many very large mature native & pine trees. Other areas of strategic heavy rough mean hitting the fairways is vital if you want to score.

I was very impressed with the condition of the course, particularly the tees & greens, it looks like many have had a redesign in recent times.

Green fees are $20/9, $30/18.

Definitely recommend playing here if you visit Portland.

Played here on Boxing Day 2011. Only played the front 9 due to time restraints. Nothing overly spectacular on the front 9 but a nice little set up. Shortish holes and wide fairways make it possible to shoot some good numbers, even for the casual player. Although the fairways are wide, if you miss them you can find yourself in some trouble. The course is fairly heavily treed and if you put the ball in the trees it can take some finding, and then take some recovering. Being elevated and just off the ocean the wind definitely comes into play. It was blowing pretty heavily when I played and at times I would say it was maybe a four or five club wind and was tricky. Definitely helps to be able to hit the ball low. Course condition was excellent from tee to green. Some nice green complexes. Not overly big, they run fast and true and good approach shot stick. Favourite hole was the par five, 7th. Waste area between tee and fairway was aesthetically pleasing, heavily treed down the left, fairway opens to the right. Hitting 2nd or 3rd shot uphill (depending on the wind) into a stiff breeze to a narrow green sloping back to front, perched on the part of the front 9 closest to the ocean. Needed a good drive to give yourself a look at par. Nice little park style course if you're in the area and want to have a hit. Would play again if in the area.

Measures 5813m Par 72 with four par 3s ranging from 127-205m, ten par 4s ranging from 280-37m and four par 5s ranging from 440-510m. Course is well-maintained with lush fairway lies, 16 bunkers, flat teebeds and smooth quickish greens. Highlights include: the 205m par 3 5th with a large undulating bunkerless green, the 370m straight 12th (rated the hardest) is tree-lined both sides with thick vegetation on the right and a greenside bunker on the right, the 455m 13th has 3 pot bunkers on the left and a large bunker with a smaller pot bunker on the right with a 90 degree dogleg right from 345m off the tee, the 370m 15th doglegs left from 200m off the tee with a small water hazard on the dogleg left corner with 2 bunkers left of the green and a dam further left, and the 510m 16th doglegs left with a water hazard 230m to clear off the tee on the left. The back nine is longer and more challenging with more water coming into play than the front nine. Portland along with Warrnambool and Port Fairy are the most challenging and best-conditioned courses in the region. Played here 24/11/2010 with green fees $25. Portland is a city of 10000 people located about 75 minutes west of Warrnambool. The city claims to be the oldest European settlement in Victoria. The drive from Warrnambool is quite unique with the wind farms along Portland Bay. Highly recommend a round here.
