I visited Mt Xavier in September last year and it was just as picturesque as I remembered it being when I was there about 5 years ago. Grass coverage is always good and a number of the holes are very pretty. Super casual atmosphere there too. Liked the fireplace in the small clubhouse as well.

Last played May 2014 , fairways have recovered from a dry summer and the course is playing well. My favorite holes are the 1st, a gentle par 4 to start and 15th a picturesque dog leg par 4 . 17 is a tough finishing hole 362 m up hill to an elevated green Par here worth a birdie on most other holes . At $20 a round its great value and Jonesie with pull you a nice cold one after the round

Time for unbiased review hereestablished in 1940s as 6-hole golf course Mount Xavier expanded to a 9-hole course during the 1950s. More land was acquired and by the 1980s, the course was expanded to its current length and the club's bowling green. Mount Xavier now measures 5340m Par 70 with five par 3s ranging from 118-177m, ten par 4s ranging from 232-380m and three short par 5s ranging from 438-450m. Course has a mixture of Victorian bent grass / poa grass / natural rye grass fairways. The small-to-medium sized greens consist of a mixture of 60% seaside bent grass with about 40% poa grass in them. The rough has mostly perennial rye grass coverage. The greens are mostly 10-20m long & 10-15m wide with little undulation but have a consistent good roll and speed. In terms of hazards, there are only 7 bunkered holes (at 3, 11, 14 & 16) with a total of 8 bunkers on the course. There is a natural creek which flows through the course which comes into general play at 8, 15 & 16. Most holes have a slight fairway bend with 8 greens not visible from the tee mound. The front nine is longer and slightly more bunkered than the shorter and relatively easier back nine. The tall pine trees frame the teeshots on 1, 4, 5, 6, 15 & 17. FRONT NINE holes worthy of mention include: the 174m 2nd (index 10) which plays to a green about 5-10m below the tee with a bunker short left; the 380m sweeping dogleg right 8th (index 2) follows the curve of the natural creek along the entire leftside rough and is played to the biggest green on the course at about 20m long x 12m wide; and the 300m 9th (index 5) which doglegs 45 degrees left from 150m off the tee and plays gently uphill to an undulating and well-guarded green with 2 bunkers short left and right. The back nine begins with the more open-styled holes (from 10-14) which have minimal trees and no bunkers, whilst the finishing holes (from 16-18) are the most challenging collection of holes on the course. BACK NINE holes worthy of mention include: the 118m 14th (index 18) which plays to a 20m wide bunkerless green about 15-20m below the tee; the 170m 16th (index 7) with plays gently uphill over the yellow-staked creek to the green with a bunker short right; the signature 362m slight bend right 17th (index 1) which plays gently uphill with OOB along the right to the smallest green on the course at about 6m long x 10m wide; and the 140m 18th (index 9) from the highest point on the course with OOB along the right to a green about 5m below the tee with a bunker short right. The par 3s (2, 10, 14, 16 & 18) are the course's best attributes: they vary in slight topographical elevation from tee to green but, like the rest of the course, are not well bunkered. The pick of the Par 3s are the 2nd, 16th & 18th. The par 5s (at 4, 11 & 13) are short, weak and lack good bunkering. There are no long Par 3s greater than 175m and no long Par 4s greater than 380m on the course. Mount Xavier is one of the shortest Par 70 layouts in the Goldfields/ Central Highlands regions and is the shortest of the 5 layouts in Greater Ballarat (others being Ballarat, Buninyong, Forest Resort Creswick & Midlands). Course elevation ranges from approximately 470m above sea level to approximately 500m above sea level at the 18th tee. The Club leases land from the Sisters of Mary Church for 7 holes around the clubhouse (1, 2, 9 & 15-18). The more open-styled five holes on the back nine (10-14) are Crown Land, whilst the natural creek which runs through the course flows during winter and dries up during the summer months. It is a shame that more holes are not orientated to the creek to ensure the natural watercourse becomes more in play, and if this ever occurs, it will increase the challenge on this easy layout. Mount Xavier is one of FIVE 18-hole grass green courses within the Greater Ballarat area which has around 100000 people. Played here 25/10/2012 with $20 green fees. Course access is from Fortune Street in the suburb of Ballarat East. Check out their website www.mtxavier.com.au

I am biased so I am giving this course 4 stars because i love playing it.It has such a great variety of holes that this counters the dry fairways in summer and rather rough appearance of the clubhouse. It is short, but it requires pinpoint placement on approach shots and the greens are normally excellent. The variety of the holes is the key. Many of the holes are secluded and their are a few open holes out the back. The only dud hole is the par 3 10th.This hole is a hidden gem because its fun to play.Highly recommended.

Mt Xavier golf course is situated in the eastern suburbs of Ballarat. It is a picturesque 18 holes. The course is excellent in terms of variety with many holes going through thick pine trees and other holes in open undulating land. Feature holes include the tantilizing 233m 1st, the downhill par 3 14th and the tough 17th 360m par 4 that requires 2 excellent shots to a tiny green. The greens are always in good shape with some severe slopes on the 4th 5th and the 16th. The fairways can become dry in summer and it is not a long course, but these deficinies are somewhat compensated by the variety of holes and challenging approach shots.
