Played here today for the first time. Despite being May, the course showed the effects of an extended dry Summer of no rain! The first 6 holes are very interesting in the bush setting but the rest is quite ordinary. I'm sure that rain would improve the course but as it stands it doesn't rate too well. Even though the fairways are watered to some extent, it was rare to get a good lie, so good shots were not rewarded. Everything was chance & luck. Not the way to enjoy golf.

A review of marong with no comment on the sharp contrast between holes 1-6 an entirely natural bush setting and holes 7-18,a parkland style layout, fails to do justice to the course .The first few holes are varied, delightful, challenging and memorable, with the highlights the5th,slightly uphill between trees, requiring a slight fade, and 6th short par 4 ,90 degree dogleg right and over a shallow creek bed.The parkland holes also include some good tests, the 17th half dogleg right, oob left and 18th par 5,oob left and again a half left turn.Marong is a good enough test of golf but with plenty of chances to score well, and like so many of our underrated sandscrape courses ready to give visitors a warm welcome. Enjoyable and satisfying as befits the venue for the state sandscrape championship(2011).A sandgreen course does not obtain membership of over 100 in an area like Bendigo with plenty of good grass green courses without good reason.Play here and you will begin to appreciate why many golfers like the alternative challenge of sand greens and the traditional scottish bump and run approach shot.Marong has good sized scrapes(well larger than average)with alternative hole locations available. The only criticism I MAKE IS THAT THE COURSE SHOULD START AT THE 7TH and conclude with the bushland section, making a truly memorable finish.

Time for an update...measures 5259m Par 69 with five par 3s ranging from 110-203m, eleven par 4s ranging from 245-402m and two par 5s ranging from 436-460m. There are 18 black soil scrapes with a short-medium sized tree-lined layout. Holes 1-6 are played on the eastern side of the highway, whilst holes 7-18 are played on the clubhouse side of the highway. There are no bunkers on the course but there is variety in the length of the par 3s and par 4s here. Unless they convert the scrapes to grass greens the course will be no better than 1-star which represents "basic golf facilities". Fees are $10 Marong is a small rural township of less than 500 people approximately 200m above sea level about 15km west of Bendigo. Course access is from the Calder Alternate Highway just north of the junction with the Wimmera Highway.

This course has as much character as any in Australia. It is located on the st Arnauld Road about 10 minutes out of Bendigo. The sand greens are in good condition and the fairways have a good layer of grass on them. The fairways are undulating and there are several trees that need to be strategically negotiated.
