Ballan Golf Club
18 Holes
PAR 62
4239 M

Ballan Golf Club is a picturesque country course located on the banks of the Werribee River.

It offers a shady tree lined course which is mostly flat with a couple of short steep hills, river crossings, and Santa Ana couch greens.

The recently refurbished clubhouse offers surprising luxury for a small club.

Ballan is a par-62 course which has only been played 4 under par once, and that was in 1924.

For those looking for a golf challenge in a beautiful location then this is the course for you.

The course is only 78 kilometres from Melbourne and is easily accessible from the Western Highway (follow the signs from Ballan).

despite its short layout and excess of par 3 holes,Ballan is fun with most of the holes on the clubhouse/werribee river level having real interest. As stated by Qtip holes 1,12 14 and 18 are good but Iwould certainly add 17-less than 100m. but like ascending the north face of the Eiger1The holes on the higher level of the course are worthy but those around the river flood plain are really memorable.Dont overlook Ballan in your travel plans just because it has 10xpar3 holes;it is enjoyable and well worth a visit.

Established as an 18-hole golf course in 1924, Ballan still measures 4239m Par 62 with TEN par 3s ranging from 98-207m and eight par 4s ranging from 258-393m. Course has cool+warm season ryegrass with some clover grass on the fairways and teebeds. There are small Santa Ana couch grass greens mostly 6-10m long x 8-10m wide greens which play slow, patchy, dry and bumpy. In terms of hazards, there are no bunkers on the course, but the Werribee River flows through the clubhouse side of the course with water coming into general play on 1, 2, 12, 13, 15, 16 & 18. Holes worthy of mention include: the opening 197m 1st (index 2) with the Werribee River along the right; the 374m straight 6th (index 5) with 20-30m tall pine trees lining the fairway and OOB Western Freeway further right; the signature 126m 12th (index 18) with an elevated cliff-like tee some 25m above the green below with OOB far right and the Werribee River nearby; the 207m 14th (index 3) is a flat long par 3 with the green underneath the clubhouse; and the 270m straight 18th (index 16) with elevated tee above the fairway with the Werribee River along the left to the green. The short layout is quite odd with the course split by Berry Street 10 shorter holes (1-3 & holes 12-18) being played around the Werribee River and the clubhouse and 8 longer holes (4-11) being played out towards the Western Freeway. There is also the 250m walk after the 12th green across Berry Street and down Fraser Street to reach the 13th tee. Not that the Werribee River is a raging torrent, but be careful when crossing the Werribee River as the many 1.2m wide concrete bridges have no hand railings Course elevation is 490m above sea level along the holes beside the Werribee River to approximately 520m above sea level along the 6th hole beside the Western Freeway. Course access is from Blow Circuit near the centre of town. Ballan remains the shortest layout in the Goldfields/Central Highlands region of Victoria. Ballan is a town of around 2750 people approximately 500m above sea level and about 33km east of Ballarat and 35km north of Meredith. Played here 25/10/2012 with $15 green fees 7 days a week. Before the drought, there used to be bent grass green, but with no water allocation the Club was forced to sandscrapes. When the drought-breaking rains came the Club seeded Santa Ana couch grass greens. There are plans in the future to restore all greens back to bent grass, until this happens, the course is poorer for it. Not a bad course, but could use some bunkers and bent grass greens
