Played here today & couldn't believe how good this country course was. Even after an extended summer of no rain, the course was in great condition. It is a great layout with undulations & doglegs & good bunkers & true fast greens. There are a few holes with very narrow tee shots to make it very interesting & the 410 meter par 4, 15th hole is one of the best around! Thoroughly enjoyed playing this course & would recommend it to anyone playing in the Bendigo area.

I really enjoy Axedale. Yes it isn't the longest but you definitely have to be straight and think your way through. The greens run really true and I would recommend this course for anyone visiting Bendigo. Quiet and just the way golf is supposed to be.

Definitely Bendigo's hidden gem, not a long course but jeez you have to be straight of the tee or you will pay the price on your score card. Six par 3's all of varying length which makes for good scoring if you are accurate. Several short par 4's being the 3rd, 5th & 8th also allow you to improve your score if you are again accurate of the tee. Three par 5's also challenge your long game. All bunkers have been grass faced which adds to the beauty of this course. Fairways are couch grassed. Do yourself a favour and play here at least once, you wont regret it.

Time for an update...Axedale measures 5306m Par 69 with six par 3s ranging from 125-182m, nine par 4s ranging from 240-400m and three par 5s ranging from 484-525m. Course had sand scrapes until 1996 and now boasts medium-sized bent grass greens with poa in some greens. The native couch grass fairways has a mixture of couch and rye grass rough amongst the medium sized tree-lined fairway layout. The teebeds consist of Santa Ana couch grass. In terms of hazards with the exception of the 337m straight 9th (index 4) and the 400m par 4 15th (index 3) all greens are bunkered with a total of 25 bunkers on the course. The Campaspe River forms the OOB eastern boundary along the 484m slight bend right 4th (index 5). There is also a small creek/channel to negotiate around the 3rd and 17th. Highlights include: the signature 240m short par 4 straight 3rd (index 11) with the flag visible from the elevated tee but a yellow-staked creek which cuts across the fairway about 20m from the front edge of the green which is guarded by 3 bunkers and a steep grassy bank on the left; the 525m slight bend left 7th (index 2) with OOB Campaspe River left of the green which is also guarded by 2 bunkers; the 132m downhill 16th (index 18) to a green with 3 bunkers; and the 375m slight bend left 17th (index 1) with a creek along entire leftside which cuts across the fairway about 60m from the elevated green which is above the fairway and guarded by a bunker short right. The best attributes at Axedale are its undulating and rather hilly layout, the variety in length of the par 3s and the risk-reward short par 4s. The layout is not heavily tree-lined with fairways wide enough to navigate a decent scoreholes 11-15 are played over the road and consist of the highest points on the course with undulating fairways and the least bunkered greens. Careful when crossing as the speed limit on this road is NOT 50km/h!!! Axedale is the shortest of the 6 layouts in Greater Bendigo (others being Belvoir Park, Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Heathcote & Neangar Park). The front nine is longer and more bunkered than the back nine. Apart from the 15th and 17th all the par 4s are less than 340m in length. The par 5s are geniune 3-shot par 5 length holes which is great to see in the country. In the country it is also good to see some fairway sprinklers having distances displayed on them. Axedale is volunteer-run and has no pro shop but still is a reasonable test of your skills. Course access is 500 metres off Mitchell Street. Played here 25/09/2012 with $20 green fees 7 days a week. Axedale is one of SIX 18-hole grass green courses within the Greater Bendigo area which has around 100000 people. Axedale has around 250 people and is located in the eastern side of the city boundaries about 20km (or 15 minutes) east of the Bendigo CBD and approximately 160-180m above sea level. Check out their website and remember their clubhouse can be reached only on the weekends...

Axedale is not an overly long course however it is an enjoyable course to play just the same. There are some wonderful short par 4's in the 3rd, 8th and 17th. The strongest hole would have to be the par 4 15th which is a dogleg left of some 400m in length. The tee shot needs to be struck with a right to left shape to set up a blind downhill 2nd to a green at the bottom of the hill. Overclub here and a creek is waiting behind the green to swallow your ball. The course is generally presented in good condition year round.

Axedale is worth travelling to play. I have played many courses in Victoria and Axedale compares favourbly to others in the region. Whilst short in length Axedale offers a great variety of holes in a very scenic location. The river and creeks have been used in a strategic way to enhance beauty and course management. The short par 4s are excellent as is the long par5 with the Campaspe river snaking all along the left hand side for over 500m. The par 4 15th is a ripper par 4 that moves slowly in an arch fashion to the left with the last 80m down a steep slope. The fairways are in good condition and the greens are relatively small so a proficient short game is neccessary to shoot well.
