Lets get the obvious out of the way first. The fairways are gravel and the greens are small little circles of sand. It's not a pleasant stroll. They gave me a little piece of fake grass to hit off but my first shot off the grass still resulted in a few marks on the bottom of my clubs. Given how long I had to save to buy the clubs I decided to tee it up all day, even for chipping. The fairways are fine gravel that looks like it gets raked by a machine so there was no trouble getting the tee in the ground.

But despite the obvious drawbacks this is actually a well thought out golf course and if you placed it near a big city and covered it in grass it would put many city courses to shame. The 15th is a driveable par 4 and would make any other golf course proud. It is driveable for long hitters at 260m with an elevated tee and elevated green. The fairway narrows significanlty near the green increasing the risk reward of trying to get close and the green sits above the fairway making any short ball roll back down the fairway about 10m. Absolute gem.

Even one of the more basic holes, the short par 4 4th has a wide fairway with a bush bunker in the middle making club selection and ball placement off the tee important. The little bush bunker has been shaped like a proper shallow fairway bunker with some low lying shrubs in the middle of it. Two of the par 5's horseshoe around small hills making the second shots blind and one of the par 3's has an excellent green steeply rising to a back pin position with a severe drop behind the green.

I wouldn't be going out of my way to play Coober Pedy but if you are passing make sure you play the course rather than just taking happy snaps from the clubhouse as I saw many people doing. They don't know what they were missing.
