COURSE DETAILS

At the heart of South Australia’s largest tourism development at Paradise Wirrina Cove is a sensational new golf course offering spectacular golf and great views over St Vincent’s Gulf and South Australia’s rich countryside.

The developers, spent 3 million dollars making sure that the new golf course at Wirrina is one of Australia’s finest. The new course is extremely playable for all types of golfers.

It was designed for a wide range of handicaps, not just for the top players. The 5th is the most challenging, the fourth is probably the most memorable. It’s a Par 3 from an elevated tee over a water hazard in front of the green.

I'm just not sure how to review this course as the experience was sort of strange: booked a comp round through Golflink but when I got there find out that the comp was separate from the course / resort. Looked like only 15 or so starters out on a Wednesday comp (not a good sign). Plus the whole pro shop area was cleaned out, lights off and more of a store room than anything else. No one around so just went out by myself; no comp for me. Course was nice enough. Some undulations but not overly hilly. Mostly bush setting and parkland style course, certainly not what I'd call a resort course. Good mix of holes, doglegs, bunkers in the lines of play and water mostly out of play, but as a par of 70 it plays a little short even from the back tees. (neither of the two par 5s were long, in fact the 16th was only 416m) Greens had been cored what looked like a fortnight ago, but were in top nick. I found them variable in speed though. Paid for the round (after the fact) back in the main resort desk ($33) and the place was pretty much like a ghost town. Considering they've got on-site accom; restaurant; mini-golf; function centre; tennis courts, I was surpised by how dead the place looked and how it's looking run down from lack of use. Maybe it gets cleaned up and busy during summer? Course didn't appear to be suffering too much neglect yet, but I'm not sure how the place is making any money and that normally spells bad things for golf courses. If I was back this way, I doubt I'd drive the extra 10mins past Links Lady Bay...

really love playing here but you sure can get smashed by the wind on a bad day.straight hard hits rewarded with a good score but if you stray you will pay.allow a bit of extra time if you are walking as you will get a work out.fairways and greens have always been in good condition when we have visited.

Wirrina Cove resort opened in 1968 and the course was redeveloped in the 1990s to what stands today. Now measures 5697m Par 70 off the back tees with four well-bunkered par 3s ranging from 148-186m, twelve par 4s ranging from 291-399m and two par 5s ranging from 416-484m. Course conditioning is good but its wintercouch fairways has patches of clover grass weeds and rye grass. The medium-sized penncross bent grass greens are smooth, but not overly quick with subtle breaks. The rough is mostly rye grass and the couch teebeds are flat and a pleasure to play off. For added challenge there are 74 bunkers on the course. Highlights include: the 399m slight dogleg left 2nd (index 3) with 3 fairway bunkers off the elevated tee to a green with 2 shortside bunkers; the 148m 4th (index 11) with its elevated teebed to a wide green with a water hazard 5m short from the front-edge of the green with 3 bunkers; the 374m uphill slight dogleg right 5th (index 1) with 2 bunkers right and storage dams on the dogleg corner to a green with 2 shortside bunkers; the 484m slight dogleg right 9th (index 9) with 7 fairway bunkers off the tee and your approach to the green to avoid with another 2 shortside bunkers; the 371m uphill slight bend right 13th (index 2) with 3 fairway bunkers off the tee and a green with 2 rightside bunkers; the signature 375m straight 14th (index 4) with 2 bunkers leftside with views of the gulf and marina; and the 186m 17th (index 6) with 3 bunkers. The par 3s were challenging holes with its variety, and the par 5s were well bunkered despite being relatively weak holes. Every hole is bunkered and there is variety off the tee with at least 4 short par 4s, elevated teeshots and some doglegs where on nine holes the flags are not visible from the tee. Given the adjoining lands have steep hillside ravines to the coastline, the course is fairly hilly, but it depends on your fitness as I managed to walk and carry my bag and play in 2.5 hours. Although it is a fair walk down from the 1st green to the 2nd tee they have signs directing you to the 2nd tee. I also agree with others in that the 296m slight dogleg left 18th (index 18) is a very weak hole to finish your round. Played here 27/09/2011 for the first time with $33 green fees. Despite its location only the signature 14th hole has Gulf and Marina views. Course access is from Paradise Drive off the Main South Road about 10 minutes south of Links Lady Bay Resort and 20 minutes north-east of Cape Jervis.

Played at Wirrina for the 1st time last weekend, really enjoyed the layout and the people. Some great holes, not always a blast with driver and pitch into the green either. Greens were cored and sanded 3 or so weeks ago, and other than 2, were in good nick. With all the rain some of the fairways were a bit boggy. Overall the biggest test is that I would go back for more. Ps I took a cart. In a couple of weeks with a bit of spring weather to bring on the couch and dry it out a bit the course would look a treat.

Wirrina Golf Club poses a challenging prospect for the everyday golfer with some very difficult holes. With this in mind the course features nice fair ways and excellent greens. But make sure that you hire a buggy because it is quite hilly in many places.
